## SEO as a skill, not just a task

SEO is treated as a skill in its own right, separate from any one business:

- SEO itself is a skill — blogging is one part of a business that uses it.
- Freelancing is a job built on it; niche research costs time; site
development costs domain, time and design; off-page SEO costs time too.
- The point to remember: whatever you invest in it, ranking pays back as
  profit.[^iskills-course-notes]

## What a ranking balances

A page's ranking rests on several factors working together, not any single one:

- **Authority** — builds trust and credibility, and influences ranking directly.
- **Content** — high-quality, relevant content is essential to ranking at all.
- **Contextual backlinks** — links from relevant, authoritative sites carry more
  weight than generic backlinks.
- **Backlinks (general)** — contribute to overall site authority.
- **Website** — the foundation every other SEO practice is applied on top of.

## Niche-level ranking factors

- **EMD (Exact Match Domain)** — a domain that exactly matches a search query,
  which historically helps ranking.
- **RD (Referring Domain)** — a domain linking to your site; more (and
  stronger) referring domains raise authority.
- **Topical authority** — built through pages with in-depth, relevant content
  on one subject.
- **Site design** — the structure and user experience of the site, affecting
  both SEO and usability.
- **Profitability** — the revenue potential the SEO effort is working toward.
- **Volume, country, language** — search volume, geography and language
  together shape which strategy applies.

## SEO now includes AEO and GEO

SEO is often called the mother of digital marketing — most other channels
(content, social, paid) eventually lean on it. What is new is that "ranking"
no longer means only a link on a results page:[^iskills-course-notes]

- **AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)** — optimizing to be the answer an AI
assistant gives directly (e.g. a voice assistant or an AI Overview), not
  just a link it shows.
- **GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)** — optimizing to be cited or used
as a source when a generative AI (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) composes an
  answer.

Both sit on top of the same foundation as traditional SEO — real content,
real authority, real structure — rather than replacing it.

## How platforms measure authority

- **Google** ranks pages using its own PageRank-derived signals.
- **Ahrefs** reports **DR (Domain Rating)** — its metric for a site's backlink
  authority.
- **Moz** reports **DA (Domain Authority)** — its equivalent metric.
